| The
Caribbean Islands are located in the midst of the Caribbean Sea between
South and North Americas and occupy the area of about 2,754,000 square
kilometers. Caribbean archipelago consists of many big and small islands
with Cuba being the largest. In 1942 Christopher Columbus has found these
tropical islands and called them the West Indies, thinking that he has
found the long sought India. Pirates, warm sea, white beaches, palms,
music, rum, rare birds and animals – all these things are associated
with the Caribbean history. Every year thousands of tourists from all
over the world visit the Caribbean region for enjoyment of the sun and
the sea. Majority of the tourists buy their airfare to the islands months
in advance to get the best travel deals that airline companies have to
offer. Columbus’ discovery of Americas marks the beginning of the exploration and exploitation age in Americas by Europeans which lasts for almost three hundred years. The Caribbean Islands had become an important trading port in the Atlantic Ocean, because of its proximity to both South- and North-American continents. Spanish galleons full of exploited gold and silver made stops on these islands for various reasons, mostly to trade or to refill the supplies of food, water, and or slaves. Spanish, Portuguese, English, Dutch, and French conquerors fought many wars with each other over the domination of the Caribbean territory, which had become so vital to their Atlantic voyages from Europe to Americas. But tradesmen, sea officers, and government officials were not the only ones who knew the benefits of the tropical Caribbean. Men, who sought a fast advancement in live, or pirates, started to seize ships full of American treasures that were going from the Caribbean back to Europe. It is believed, that some pirates dug and left their treasure at some of the Caribbean islands and treasure hunters come and look for it to this day. But possibly the biggest treasure of the Caribbean is its nature. Besides the beautiful warm sea and soft white sand, the islands are home to rare plants and animals which are not found anywhere else on the globe. Therefore, money that people spend on vacation and airfare to the Caribbean is incomparable to the value received in return. |
